Remarks by Ambassador Ren Yisheng at the 2021 National Conference on the Environment and Climate Change
2021-06-04 23:08

(2 June 2021)

H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia,

Professor Wilson K. Tarpeh, Executive Director/CEO of the Environmental Protection Agency,

Hon. Representatives of the Legislature and Cabinet,

Colleagues of the diplomatic corps,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning!

Congratulations on the convening of the National Conference on Environment and Climate Change. It demonstrates the great importance attached by the Liberian government to environment protection and climate change. Thank you for the opportunity to address the Conference.

Lucid water and lush mountains are invaluable assets. There is only one globe. We need to implement development concept of innovation, coordination, greenness, openness, and shared benefits. In order to do so, we should accelerate the formation of spatial patterns, industrial structures, production methods, and lifestyles that conserve resources and protect the environment, and leave natural ecology with rest and recuperation. Only by so doing, can we realize the harmonious coexistence of man and nature

Meanwhile, green and sustainable development of the world is facing severe challenges as the global economy becomes more unstable with mounting uncertainties amid the raging COVID-19 pandemic. After the pandemic, countries should not return to the old high-pollution and high-emission path of development, but should seek a win-win approach of economic development and ecological and environmental protection, grasping new opportunities to achieve high-quality development. The international community should help each other and work together to ensure that development and green transformation go hand in hand, reinforce each other and facilitate the upgrading of the quality of development. Also, the international community should pay great attention to the concerns and appeals of developing countries and increase technological, financial and capacity support to help them achieve a green and low-carbon transformation.

H.E. President Weah,

Ladies and gentlemen,

In recent years, China has carried out a series of fundamental, pioneering and long-term work, accelerated the promotion of the top-level design of ecological civilization and the construction of institutional systems, strengthened the construction of the rule of law, established and implemented the central environmental protection inspection system, and vigorously promoted green development. China has achieved remarkable results in tackling desertification, air, soil and water pollution, and in developing such clean and green energy as solar power and wind power.

China is firmly committed to working together with other Parties to strengthen implementation of the Paris Agreement. As the largest developing country, China is making arduous and exceptional efforts to achieve the modernization goal by the middle of this century while realizing low-carbon and green development. China has promised to strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Liberia has made a lot of efforts and achievements in environment protection and tackling climate change. China is ready to work closely with Liberia in better conserving the nature and promoting green and sustainable development.

Thank you!
