Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Comment on Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso's Remarks on Whitewashing the History of Aggression
2006-02-06 00:00

Q: It's reported that the Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso said on February 4th that Taiwan owed its current high-level education to Japan's colonial rule. What's China's comment on this?

A: We are shocked at the remarks brazenly made by the Japanese Foreign Minister to whitewash Japan's history of aggression, to which we wish to express our strong indignation. It is a fact known to all that after the Sino-Japanese War in 1894, Japan seized Taiwan by force, enslaved people in Taiwan Island and brought Chinese people tremendous disaster and sufferings. Japan's colonial rule in Taiwan for half a century was a dark page in the history of Japanese militarist aggression of China. Such remarks of the highest-level official in charge of diplomatic authorities of an inflicting country not only distort history but also seriously hurt the feelings of the Chinese people. Such act to challenge justice and conscience of mankind is only to lift a stone but to let it drop on one's own feet.
