Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu's Response to Japan's Remarks on the Diaoyu Islands
2010-05-31 09:20

Q:According to media report, the Japanese side said on May 27th that the Diaoyu Islands were part of Japanese territory. Once military conflicts occur between China and Japan over the Islands, the U.S. would also respond with Japan according to the Japan-U.S. Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. What's China's comment on that?

A: China enjoys indisputable sovereignty over the Diaoyu Island and its adjacent islets which have been an inalienable part of China's territory since ancient times. The Japan-U.S. Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, as a bilateral arrangement, should not harm the interests of the third parties including China.
