Hailing the country's founding anniversary, Jia Qinglin, also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said the decision of opening up and reform had been proved vital for China to make great achievements in the latest 30 years.

"The dedications and contributions of all overseas Chinese had been also essential for China to make the progress," he added. "Especially in this year they showed great love and solicitude by helping Chinese people suffered from snow and quake disasters."

Overseas Chinese also actively supported and participated in the global torch relay of the Beijing Olympic Games this year, Jia said.

The official said the central government will carry forward the "one country, two systems" policy in Hong Kong and Macao and provide all-out support to the governments of the two special administrative regions.

He said the Chinese mainland will further promote economic and cultural exchanges with Taiwan, adopt more favored policies for the Taiwan compatriots and maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait.
