China says reports on China's arms transportation to Zimbabwe "fabrication"
2008-12-23 18:19

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- China refuted the reports on its arms transportation to Zimbabwe via the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as "sheer fictitious" and having "ulterior motives", the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said here Tuesday.

When asked to comment on a batch of weapons made-in China were reportedly transported to Zimbabwe via the DRC in the second half this year, Qin said some western media distorted the UN report released on Dec.12, and slandered that China had transported arms to Zimbabwe.

Qin said any one who conducts serious reading of the report will find the accusation is totally groundless.

According to the UN report, a group of UN experts had "received credible information that the weapons transported originated in China".

The UN report said the DRC could become a transit point for weapons destined for other countries, whereas the report didn't mention China transported arms to Zimbabwe via the DRC.
