The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Liberia established diplomatic relations on February 17, 1977. On October 10, 1989, the Samuel Doe regime in Liberia "resumed diplomatic relations" with Taiwan authorities, and the Chinese side immediately announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Liberia. On August 10, 1993, China and Liberia resumed diplomatic ties. On September 5, 1997, the Charles Taylor regime announced its recognition of "two Chinas". On the 9th, China suspended diplomatic relations with Liberia.
