2008-01-25 00:00

Chinese Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao promised more support to Liberia's health sector.

Speaking at the hand-over ceremony of the house project for Chinese Medical Team in Liberia, Amb. Zhou said he was glad to see the Chinese Medical Team finally move to their new house and their living conditions greatly improved. He urged them to work even harder for the benefit of their Liberian brothers and sisters.

According to Mr. Zhou, when resuming the dispatching of medical personnel to Liberia in 2005, the Chinese Government had taken full consideration of the financial strains of the Liberian Government and hence decided to build an apartment building for the Chinese Medical Team in JFK Hospital. The apartment building is an embodiment of the good will of the Chinese Government and people, and at the same time, a display of China's commitment to Liberia's efforts to improve its medical service for the general public.

Amb. Zhou also revealed that a Chinese malaria team will arrive in Liberia next month and carry out malaria prevention and treatment training for local medical personnel. And more Chinese anti-malaria medicine will be donated to Liberia this year. And more importantly, the China-aided Tapeta Hospital project will start soon.

Also speaking at the program, Ms. Akerele, Foreign Minister of Liberia expressed her gratitude towards the Chinese Government for its continued support. "We are looking forward to more cooperations with China in the field of health care", said the minister.

The program was attended also by deputy and assistant foreign ministers of Liberia, JFK Hospital representatives, Chinese Embassy staff and journalists. Amb. Zhou and Minister Akerele signed the turn-over document as representatives of their respective government.
