Chinese Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao Attended the Medal Awarding Ceremony for Chinese Peacekeepers

On April 5, 2008, Chinese Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao attended the medal-awarding ceremony for the Chinese Engineering Unit and the Medical Unit in Zedrew who were not able to attend the medal awarding ceremony held in Monrovia earlier on March 25. All of the peacekeepers were awarded with the UN Peace Medal. Ambassador Zhou, accompanied by the Commanders of the two Units, inspected their medal parade and military skills demonstration.

Lt. Col. Mao Zhenping, Commander of the Chinese Engineering Unit, summarized the work carried by the Engineering Unit and the Medical Unit and pledged to continue to work hard until the day of departure for rotation.

Ambassador Zhou congratulated the Chinese peacekeepers for successfully fulfilling their mission and winning of the UN Medal. He praised the hardworking and sacrifice of the peacekeepers in carrying out their mission by overcoming all kinds of obstacles and difficulties. The excellent job, which play an very important role in maintaining peace and promoting development in Liberia, have been spoken highly of by the UNMIL and the Liberian people and government. The Medical Unit, besides successfully carrying out the medical service to UNMIL personnel, has provided medical help to the locals and offered personnel training and medical support to local health institutions. The Engineering Unit repaired the main road from Zwedru to Fish Town, the only access to Southeastern Liberia while maintaining other roads, bridges. He urged the peacekeepers to pass on the good experience to the next dispatch of Chinese peacekeepers.

During the trip, Ambassador Zhou inspected the 65 kilometers road from Zedrew to Fishtown, and the 71 kilometers road repaired by the Chinese Engineering Unit and also attended the opening ceremony of a medical technical supporting center by the Chinese Medical Unit.

On the way back from Zedrew to Monrovia, Ambassador Zhou visited several agricultural fields and was briefed on the development of agriculture of Grand Gedeh by Christopher Bailey, Superintendent of Grand Gedeh County, who traveled with the Ambassador within his county. Ambassador Zhou also inspected some Chinese aided projects and investment projects, including the construction sites FM relay station in Zedrew, Tubman Military Barracks Project in Gbarnga, Bong County and the Hong Kong-invested M.L.Lee Rubber Factory in Magibi County.
