Chinese Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao Gives an Interview to LBS

Chinese Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao said he enjoys his stay in Liberia. "I have got along so well with the local people, and I love the weather and food here." That was the words of Amb. Zhou when he gave an interview to Lewis Togba of Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) on May 7, 2008.

 

On the Sino-Liberian political relations, the Chinese Diplomat said that since the resumption of diplomatic relations in 2003, China and Liberia have enjoyed a sound relationship and ever-increasing mutual trust. The two countries have had close cooperation in international arena, supporting each other on issues that are vital to their fundamental national interests, such as the Taiwan Issue and cancelation of Liberia's foreign debt.

 

He also briefed the journalist on the progress of China's aid projects. According to him, the LBS FM Radio Stations will be concluded soon while the Fendell Campus of the University of Liberia is under construction. The project of Tapeta Hospital in Nimba County will be started soon while the Malaria Prevention and Treatment Center in JFK Hospital is at its full operation with the 11 medical personnel recently trained by Chinese medical experts.

 

On the bilateral economic cooperations, Amb. Zhou revealed that with the encouragement of the Chinese Government, more and more Chinese companies are coming to Liberia for investment. Some companies have already built good reputations for their excellent work. He envisioned a bright prospect for mutually beneficial cooperations in fields such as agriculture, mining, establishing of special economic zones and etc.

 

On the widely-concerned food security of Liberia, the senior diplomat said with the hike in global food prices, Liberia is seriously affected. He pointed out that Liberia has a high potential of food production and believed that Liberia could reach food self-sufficiency one day. China will render its help to Liberia in this field. According to him, the Chinese agricultural experts in BWI will help the local people in rice planting while the China-aided Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center aimed at agricultural training and commercial farming will be built soon.

 

Amb. Zhou also expressed his optimism in Liberia's future by saying: "There are more streetlights at night, more vehicles on the move and more new buildings along the roads, which are clear signs of Liberia's progress."
