H.E. Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia, said she felt profound sympathy for the catastrophe of the earthquake in which hundreds of Chinese brothers and sisters lost their lives.
She made the remarks when she came to the Chinese Embassy in Liberia to sign the book of condolence for the Sichuan Earthquake victims on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. She also expressed the belief that China will overcome this difficulty and that China-Liberian relations will grow stronger.
Earlier, Vice President Boakai said in his words of condolence, "What affects China is what affects Liberia. Liberia will remain a true friend to China." He also made his personal donation to the earthquake-affected people in Sichuan.
The Chinese Embassy opened the book of condolence for three days from May 19 to 21. Also coming to express condolence were Foreign Minister and other cabinet ministers, Speaker of the House of Representatives, senate President Pro-tempore, legislators, ambassadors, representatives of UN organizations and other international organizations, professors, school students and etc. Many of them expressed their appreciation over the way rescue work has been organized and the performance of Chinese leaders in the process. Just as Amb. Loj, SRSG of UNMIL, said, " The rescue work is moving. The UN hopes that the support shown by the people and leadership of the People's Republic of China as well as the whole international community will enable everyone affected to look forward and relieved."
