Chinese Police Peacekeepers Honored for Role in Liberia's Peace and Stability

7 January Monrovia, Liberia – 16 Chinese police peacekeepers had been awarded for their role in consolidating peace throughout Liberia during a UNMIL (United Nations Mission in Liberia) medal award ceremony at Monrovia City Hall in the afternoon of January 6, 2010. H.E.Mr. ZHOU Yuxiao, Chinese Ambassador accredited to Liberia, witnessed this moment and expressed his appreciations and proud when he delivered his speech during the program.

In remarks made during the ceremony, Ambassador ZHOU praised the 16 Chinese police peacekeepers as "fullfilled their duties diligently, faithfully and professionally" during their 8 months tenure, though challenged by "all sorts of difficulties and problems such as language barriers, cultural differences, malaria attacks, harsh climate and etc.". "As the Chinese Ambassador, I am very proud of them." The senior diplomat said.

Following Chinese envoy's full-of-praise speech, UNMIL head Ellen Margrethe Løj, Special Representative of Secretary General, also added her voice to the praise of the 16 Chinese police peacekeepers, giving them special commendation for their role to act as the People's Police in maintaining the peace and stability in this postwar West Africa country.

The Chinese Formed Police Unit comprises 3 female and 13 male devoted police officers who conduct a range of tasks, including joint patrols with other UN Formed Police Units and advisors, as well as the Liberia National Police.

The ceremony was attended by: Counselor Li Zhigong and Senior Colonel Liu Shengli of Chinese Embassy, and other high rank officials and officers of UNMIL.
