2010-07-30 18:48

The Central Agriculture Research Institute Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center project was undertaken by the Chinese government under the 8 policy measures announced by Chinese President HU Jintao at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in November 2006. The Longping High Tech. Corporation was designated by the Chinese government as the contractor to carry out the project. The construction work took one year starting in June 2009 and completed in June 2010. The Center covers a area of 26,000 ㎡with a floor space of 2,400 ㎡.

Overview of the CARI Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center

It is made up of the following facilities: a 2-storey office and classroom building, an experts’ apartment building, a warehouse for chemicals and fertilizer, a garage for agricultural machines, a seed storage, a water tower, a fire-fighting pool and a basketball court. The Center is equipped with necessary agricultural machine and farming tools. The Center is provided with 32.6 hectares of farmland by the Liberian government. Its facilities will be used for joint scientific research by agro scientists from both sides and training for local trainees. The farmland will be used for demonstrative and experimental farming. The research and training will initially focus on rice, corn and vegetable growing at initial stage and may be extended into animal husbandry at later period.

Teching and Administrative Building

The project is divided into three phases, namely the construction phase which has been completed; the technical cooperation phase of 3 years when the Chinese government will be responsible for most of its operational costs for training and experimental farming and the sustainable development phase of 12 years when the contractor is required to generate its own revenue to cover its operational costs of training and production. The contractor is expected to turn the project into a viable commercial farm that can be emulated or modeled by local entrepreneurs. It will be handed over the to Liberian side when the agreement signed between the Chinese and Liberian governments expires a dozen year later.

Staff Dormitory Building

It is designed to contribute to the improvement of agro technologies and techniques and to the expansion of agricultural production, so as to ensure food security of Liberia.
