2011-01-26 19:19

Monrovia, Liberia: Chinese ambassador to Liberia, Zhou Yuxiao has welcomed the level of democracy practiced and tolerated in the country, while he calls for peaceful means as Liberia draw near to its October election. Calling on all parties involved with the ensuring Presidential and General Election which is expected to be held this October, the Chinese Envoy said Liberians must seek for national reconciliation before election. According to him, without national reconciliation violence is the order of the day, and that is something he doesn't hope to see here in Liberia. He expressed his comments, when he toured voters' registration sites in Paynesville, Monrovia.

Amb. Yuxiao said Ivory Coast is going through its time of election violence due to the lack of national reconciliation, which has caused potential setback of the peace and stability in that West African nation, stagnated the country, and forced thousands of its citizens to flea as refugees into neighboring countries.

He then praised the exercise of voter's registration which commenced over the last 2 weeks as being very peaceful. "As a friend of Liberia, I really want to see a smooth, peaceful, fair and transparent election, and registration is the first step," said the Chinese Ambassador. The Chinese Ambassador later acknowledge voters registration to being cogent to attaining democracy or any election process…where according to him; a thousand mile journey has to begin with a first step.

Reassuring Liberians on China's nation building efforts here, the Chinese Envoy said his government is happy and proud to be represented here, and will continue to support Liberia's infrastructural development process.

He later mentioned some motorbikes handed over to the National Election Commission last year; as their own means of supporting democracy in this post war recovery nation. "I am a real sincere friend to Liberia, and what I want to see is peace and stability. When election comes, things sometimes turn out to be good, and sometimes things turn out to be nasty! I really don't want to see a nasty situation that will appear in the process of election year," stated the Chinese Diplomat.
