Monrovia, Liberia – Liberian President Ellen Johnson has reiterated her Government’s commitment to the One China policy. The President said she believes the People’s Republic of China represents the interest of the people of China, adding, “we stand by that policy.”

President Johnson Sirleaf reaffirmed the commitment on Tuesday at the Foreign Ministry when she received the Letters of Credence from the new Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Mr. Zhao Jianhua.

The President recounted the meaningful role China has played in Liberia’s reconstruction, including the PRC’s peacekeeping effort in Liberia and its support for Liberia through the United Nations Security Council.  The President also praised China for its involvement in the rehabilitation and construction of roads by Chinese engineers, as well as the construction of schools and health facilities. She lauded China for its contribution toward Liberia’s manpower development needs through the provision of scholarships for Liberian students to study in China in various fields, noting that “development cannot be promoted without capacity building.”

The President said Liberia will continue to promote and strengthen the long-standing bilateral relationship that exists between the two countries.

For his part, the new Chinese Ambassador praised the level of development under the administration of President Johnson Sirleaf, terming the progress as ‘tremendous achievement” in national development.  “China is ready to continue our friendly relationship,” Ambassador Zhao assured the Liberian leader, asserting that he would spare no efforts to consolidate the ties during his tenure as Ambassador to Liberia.

Ambassador Zhao said China was delighted to be a part of the peacekeeping effort in Liberia, and was moved that Liberians appreciate the role his country is playing in its reconstruction.

Ambassador Zhao succeeds Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao whose three-year tenure in Liberia ended in March this year.
