III. Carried out pilot demonstration

VI) Carried out demonstrations in livestock production.

Swine production: Chinese SSC team reconditioned local old buildings as pigpens for demonstration's purpose. There were 3 demonstration sites with the total area of 430㎡. Chinese specialists encouraged Liberian counterparts to purchase 8 breeding pigs at their own expenses and demonstrated all-around practical production technologies such as economical feed preparation, mating, birth assistance, cutting teeth and tails, gelding and spaying, disease diagnosis and treatment etc.

Poultry production: Chinese specialists reconstructed 3 poultry (chicken and duck) houses from old buildings and one of them kept 200 chickens. The practical technologies demonstrated were how to raise the poultry and how to prepare the feed.

Rabbit production: Chinese specialists built a new cage with 20 rabbits inside and demonstrated the practical skills of designing and making the rabbit cage and raising rabbits.

Cattle and goat production: Chinese specialists designed and fenced 3500㎡of pasture with a fodder shed, a concentrated feed storeroom, a feed-processing room and a flat playground for flocks and herds inside, and at the same time, demonstrated the practical technologies such as alteration of sheep pens, improvement of goat varieties, castration, deworming and ensiling of maize stalks etc. 16 heads of goats were kept in the demonstration field.

VII) Carried out demonstrations in aquaculture.

Chinese specialists designed 2 fishnet cages, reconditioned 1500㎡ of fish ponds, built 3 earth dams, produced 400,000 tilapia fingerlings and 100,000 catfish fingerlings and constructed 3 demonstration fish ponds with the area of 2300㎡ and the yield of 5600 kg which is 125% above local annual average. The life circle of fishes was shortened by 37.5% as well in the demonstration fish ponds. Chinese specialists demonstrated and transferred the practical technologies of water quality determination, fish feed processing, routine patrol of fish ponds, prevention and treatment of fish diseases, fish stocking and fish anatomy etc. The new technologies demonstrated and transferred have greatly improved local production technologies and increased the yield per unit area of fish pond.

VIII) Carried out demonstration in water conservancy.

In Measuagoon duty station, Chinese specialist designed independently and constructed, together with parties concerned, an earth dam and an irrigation system with the designed capacity of 1000 cubic meters at the 1^st phase, which can irrigate 10 ha of farmland, and the expected life time of 10 years. The water conservancy facilities aim to supply 10 ha of maize demonstration field in Measuagoon district, CAPE MOUNT County and also function as a model for other small sized irrigation facilities.
