Chinese Embassy in Liberia Holds Virtual Reception Celebrating the 71st Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China

On September 24, 2020, H.E. Mr. Ren Yisheng, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, held a virtual reception at the Chinese Embassy to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia, Minister of Finance and Development Planning Hon. Mr. Samuel D. Tweah Jr, Minister of State Without Portfolio Hon. Trokon A. Kpui, Minister of Education Hon. Mr. Prof. Ansu D. Sonii and other important government officials, people from all walks of life such as media, think tanks, diplomatic envoys of various countries in Liberia, representatives of international organizations, and

representatives of overseas Chinese and Chinese-funded enterprises in Liberia were present online.

Ambassador Ren said in his remarks that 2020 is an extraordinary year, and the sudden COVID-19 poses a serious threat to the life safety and health of people all over the world. The CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core practiced the idea of people first and life first, United and led the people of all ethnic groups in China, launched the people's war, the overall war, and the war to stop the epidemic, and achieved great strategic achievements in the fight against the epidemic. On this basis, China has made overall plans to promote epidemic prevention and control and economic and social development, and promptly restored production and living order. China's economy has shown a strong recovery momentum, with an economic growth of 3.2% in the second quarter of this year, making it the only country among the world's major economies that has achieved positive economic growth. This year, under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people will win the tough battle of poverty alleviation, win the decisive victory in building a well-off society in an all-round way. China will eliminate absolute poverty for the first time in its history and meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals on poverty ten years ahead of schedule.

Ambassador Ren stressed that it is impossible to overcome the epidemic by politicizing, and stigmatizing and scapegoating. In an open, transparent and responsible manner, China has actively participates in global cooperation against epidemics while doing a good job in its own epidemic prevention and control, and immediately informed the World Health Organization and relevant countries and regional organizations of epidemic information, shared the gene sequence of COVID-19, and conducted over 70 exchange activities on epidemic prevention and control. China has announced two batches of US$ 50 million in cash assistance to WHO, provided 283 batches of anti-epidemic assistance to 150 countries and 4 international organizations, provided and exported anti-epidemic materials to more than 200 countries and regions.  On September 22nd, President Xi Jinping announced a new round of support measures for the UN COVID-19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan and China-FAO South-South Cooperation Trust Fund (Phase III) in his speech at the General Debate of the 75th Session of The United Nations General Assembly. China has always been a practitioner of multilateralism, resolutely maintained the international system with the United Nations as its core, and promoted the building of a community of human destiny through practical actions.

Ambassador Ren introduced China-Africa solidarity against epidemic and China's aid to AU CDC headquarters (first phase), and spoke highly of the further deepening of political mutual trust and friendship between the Chinese and Liberian governments and peoples in the fight against epidemic. China will continue to support the economic and social development of Liberia to the best of its ability, encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest in the industry, and is willing to work together with the Liberian side to strengthen the strategic connection between the "Eight major initiatives" and "Belt and Road Initiative" of China-Africa cooperation and the "Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development" put forward by H.E. President George Manneh Weah , so as to jointly promote mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries to achieve more fruitful results and better benefit the two peoples.

In his remarks, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia, expressed warm congratulations on behalf of the Liberian government and people on the 71st anniversary of the founding of New China, and extended sincere greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping. He highly praised China's great achievements in fighting against COVID-19 under the strong leadership of President Xi Jinping, and pointed out that China's experience in fighting against the epidemic is worth learning by Africa, and thanked the Chinese government and all sectors of society for their strong support in fighting the epidemic.

H. E. President George Manneh Weah spoke highly of the pragmatic cooperation between Liberia and China and the sound development momentum of bilateral relations. He said that in recent years, the two countries have carried out fruitful cooperation under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The "Belt and Road Initiative" has been effectively linked with the "Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development". China has actively participated in the post-war reconstruction of Liberia, providing important support for infrastructure construction and economic development. Infrastructure projects such as the Ministerial Complex, the Annexes to the Capitol Hill and the airport terminal building aided by China have made important contributions to sustainable development. China is a sincere and reliable friend and partner of Liberia. Liberia attaches great importance to its relations with China, firmly adheres to the One-China policy, and is willing to work together with China to continuously enhance political mutual trust, actively expand mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, and push bilateral relations to a new level.

 

At the reception, the guests watched the video clips produced by the embassy, which reflected China's 71-year development achievements,the fight against in COVID-19 and international anti-epidemic cooperation, and enjoyed the wonderful martial arts performances recorded by the teachers and students of the Confucius Institute of the University of Liberia.
