The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Liberia Hosts a Media Video Conference to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of FOCAC

On November 24th, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Liberia held a media video conference to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), in which Chinese Ambassador to Liberia H.E. Mr. Ren Yisheng attended and delivered a speech, giving a comprehensive introduction to the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the fruitful achievements made by the FOCAC in the past 20 years and the bright prospects of China-Africa cooperation, and China’s achievements in anti-epidemic diplomacy and post-epidemic economic recovery. Ambassador Ren also exchanged and interacted with participants on relevant issues. More than 20 people attended the meeting, including Honorable Mr. Charles B. Coffey, President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) and journalists from the major medias of Liberia including Daily OBSERVER, the NEWS, New Dawn and Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS). Mr. Xu Kun, the Political Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Liberia presided over the conference.

Ambassador Ren said that the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of CPC, which was successfully held not long ago, spoke highly of the outstanding achievements of China’s 13th  Five-Year Plan (FYP), deliberated and approved the proposals for formulating the 14th FYP (2021-2025) for National Economic and Social Development and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035, which drew a new blueprint for China’s development in the next 5 years and the next 15 years. In 2021, China will enter a new development stage and embark on a new journey of building a modern socialist country in all respects. This will be a milestone in the history of China’s development.

Ambassador Ren emphasized that in the past week, President Xi Jinping attended an array of international events, the 12th BRICS Summit, the 27th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the 15th G20 Leaders’ Summit that virtually gathered leaders of the world’s major economies, and has  reaffirmed China’s firm commitment to helping the world defeat COVID-19, building an open world economy, and advocating multilateralism, and put forward China’s plan and made China’s contribution for global cooperation against the pandemic, post-epidemic economic recovery and reshaping the international order.

Ambassador Ren indicated that since the establishment of the FOCAC 20 years ago, under the guidance of the Forum, China-Africa friendship has continued to deepen, political mutual trust has been consolidated, pragmatic cooperation has yielded fruitful results, and people-to-people exchanges have flourished. China attaches great importance to the development of China-Africa relations, always adhering to the principles guiding China’s Africa policy, including sincerity, real results, amity and good faith, and pursuing the greater good and shared interests, is willing to work with Africa to build a stronger China-Africa community with a shared future under the framework of the FOCAC and the Belt and Road Initiative.

Ambassador Ren reviewed the fraternal friendship between China-Africa and China-Liberia in the fight against the pandemic at the beginning of this year, saying that China will always remember the invaluable support African countries including Liberia gave us at the height of our battle with the coronavirus. In return, China was the first to rush in with assistance and has stood side by side with the African people. Under the guidance of President Xi and President Weah, practical cooperation of China-Liberia in various fields will surely have a brighter future.

Honorable Mr. Charles B. Coffey, President of PUL thanked China for its important support in the infrastructure construction, health care and media construction of Liberia, and expressed that Liberia and China friendship has a long history. The media of Liberia is willing to maintain close cooperation with China and push the friendly relations between Africa -China and Liberia-China to a new level.

Ambassador Ren’s speech aroused enthusiastic response from the participants. They all commended the fruitful achievements of the FOCAC in the past 20 years and the great development achievements of the Chinese people led by the CPC. They also thanked China for its important contribution to promoting the post-war reconstruction process of Liberia, and said that China-Africa cooperation has brought tangible benefits to the people of Liberia and Africa. They believe that with the personal commitment and support of Chinese and African leaders, China-Africa cooperation will achieve greater success. Ambassador Ren also answered questions from participants on how to further carry out practical cooperation in anti-epidemic, economic and trade and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
