The congress is held every five years, and take stock of the party’s work over the previous five years, as well as major achievements and valuable experience of the party’s central committee.

He said that resolving the Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese that must be resolved by the Chinese. “Resolving the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese, a matter that must be resolved by the Chinese. We will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and the utmost effort, but we will never promise to renounce the use of force, and we reserve the option of taking all measures necessary. This is directed solely at interference by outside forces and the few separatists seeking ‘Taiwan independence’ and their separatist activities; it is by no means targeted at our Taiwan compatriots,” he said.

Xi noted that the “wheels of history are rolling” on toward China’s reunification and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. “Complete reunification of our country must be realized, and it can, without doubt, be realized. We have always shown respect and care for our Taiwan compatriots and worked to deliver benefits to them. We will continue to promote economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation across the Straits; and we will encourage people on both sides of the Straits to work together to promote Chinese culture and forge closer bonds,” he said.

The Chinese leader told the gathering that “the five years since the 19th National Congress of the CPC have been truly momentous and extraordinary. The past decade marked three major events of great immediate importance and profound historical significance for the cause of the Party and the people”, he said.

He said the CPC has secured historic achievements and seen historic changes in the cause of the Party and the country over the past decade, and the country has seen historic rise in economic strength; including joining ranks of world’s innovators.

According to Xi, China will improve the system of income distribution, keeping distribution according to work as the mainstay with multiple forms of distribution existing alongside it.

“We will ensure more pay for more work and encourage people to achieve prosperity through hard work. We will promote equality of opportunity, increase the incomes of low-income earners, and expand the size of the middle-income group,” he said.

The CPC, he adds, has achieved overwhelming victory, fully consolidates gains in fight against corruption, adding that the CPC, will work hard to resolve the pressing difficulties and problems that concern the people most, improve the basic public service system to raise public service standards and make public services more balanced and accessible, so as to achieve solid progress in promoting common prosperity.
