The Chinese Embassy in Liberia and the Federation of Liberia Youth jointly held a seminar on youth agricultural development

From May 29th to 30th, the Chinese Embassy in Liberia, along with the Federation of Liberia Youth, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Agriculture, jointly organized a seminar on the development of youth agriculture with the theme of "China-Liberia Friendly Cooperation: Empowering Youth and Cultivating the Future of Agriculture". Mr. Xu Kun, charge d’affairs of Chinese Embassy in Liberia, attended the event and delivered opening and closing remarks. Hon. Bhofal R. Chambers, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abraham Darius Dillion, Hon. Isaac Doe, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Youth and Sports, Amb. Bobby Whitfield, Chairman of WASH Commission, Madam Banica Elliott, President of the Federation of Liberian Youth, Representative of the Minister of Agriculture, Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Representative of the Cooperative Development Agency, and Representative of National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority attended and delivered speeches at the event. The newly appointed Political Counselor Fan Erwei and Commercial Counselor Li Jiang of the Embassy in Libya attended the relevant activities. Prof. Su Lirong, Deputy Director of Agricultural Technology Extension Center, Datong Lake District, Yiyang City, Senior Agronomist, attended and gave a lecture online. More than 100 young representatives from 15 counties in Liberia, including Chinese funded institutions, representatives of overseas Chinese, and media representatives, participated in the event.

At the welcome dinner on May 29th, on behalf of the embassy, Mr. Xu warmly welcomed and sincerely thanked the guests in his speech. He expressed that the Chinese government has always attached great importance to the development and cooperation with Liberia in the field of agriculture, and has carried out a series of projects such as the Agricultural Demonstration Center for Liberia, bamboo and rattan weaving, and vegetable planting technology cooperation. He has trained nearly a thousand young skilled workers in Liberia, It has played a positive role in promoting youth employment and economic development in Liberia. China will continue to uphold the principles of sincerity, pragmatism, sincerity, and trustworthiness, as well as the concept of righteousness and benefit, and actively promote the development of friendly, pragmatic, and win-win cooperation between China and Liberia. Wishing this conference a complete success.

Speaker Chambers and Senator Dillion stated in their speeches that this seminar is of great significance for promoting the development of Liberia. Agriculture is one of the most important industries in Liberia, and the government and legislative institute have always attached great importance to it, committed to agricultural modernization, and focused on combining youth empowerment with agricultural development to change the long-term situation of African countries being raw material producers. Thanks to the Chinese government and embassy in Liberia for their tremendous support for the development of agriculture and the empowerment of young people. China has made tremendous achievements in agriculture, and we hope that the two countries can carry out more agricultural exchanges and cooperation in the future. As a good brother and partner of China, Liberia will never take any measures that violate the One China principle. Wishing this conference a complete success and a long live friendship between China and Liberia!

The teachers and students of the Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia were also invited to perform Chinese martial arts and Chinese song and dance at the dinner party, the exciting program won applause from the on-site guests.


At the seminar on May 30th, Mr. Xu introduced the significant achievements in agricultural development since the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Mr. Xu also Introduced President Xi's concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and the "the Belt and Road" initiative, the "Global Development Initiative", the "Global Security Initiative" and the "Global Civilization Initiative", and the situation of China's positive promotion of agricultural development and youth empowerment, emphasizing that in recent years, the two countries have effectively carried out many agricultural cooperation projects on the basis of equality, mutual respect, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, and win-win cooperation. Mr. Xu said that the development of Liberia's agriculture not only has unique advantages, but also faces great challenges such as the COVID-19 and the Ukrainian crisis. China is willing to work hand in hand with African countries, including Liberia, to jointly build the “Belt and Road”, implement the “Nine Programs” of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, and build a closer China-Africa and China-Liberia community with a shared future, so as to build lasting peace and common prosperity and make new and greater contributions to the world. 

Madam Banica Elliott, President of the FLY, stated that we are honored to embark on this journey of change together with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Chinese Embassy in Liberia. This seminar is an important milestone in our joint efforts to address food insecurity in Liberia and create opportunities for young farmers. Liberia faces many challenges in the agricultural sector, including limited modern agricultural technology, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of investment in youth development. The seminar aims to provide young farmers with the skills and knowledge required for agricultural modernization to increase productivity, improve food production, and stimulate economic growth. By combining the advantages and resources of Liberia and China, we can create a prosperous future for Liberia and address the urgent issues of food insecurity and youth unemployment.

Hon. Isaac Doe, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Youth and Sports, representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and other guests delivered speeches respectively, expressing that Liberia's agricultural development faces challenges and is willing to strengthen communication with international partners, including China, in the future to continuously promote the modernization of Liberia's agriculture and empower young people, and contribute to promoting food security, peace and stability, and economic and social development in Liberia and even Africa.

During the one-day seminar, the attending guests and representatives conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions on topics such as the integration of agricultural development and youth empowerment, the inspiration for China's significant development achievements on agriculture, and international and regional cooperation in agriculture through speeches, Q&A, and group discussions. The meeting atmosphere was warm and friendly. The attending representatives highly appreciated the joint initiative of the Chinese Embassy in Liberia and the Federation of Liberian Youth to hold a youth agricultural development seminar, and praised China's development achievements and practical cooperation between China and Liberia. They expressed their hope to learn from China's successful experience and strive to promote agricultural modernization and youth empowerment in Liberia.
