On July 23, 2020, while chairing the Special Video Conference of China and Latin American and Caribbean Countries' Foreign Ministers on COVID-19, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, 60 years ago, Cuba took the lead among Latin American and Caribbean countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, opening a new chapter for China's relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries. Over the past six decades, both sides have become good friends featuring mutual respect and equal treatment, and good partners featuring mutual benefit, win-win results and common development, setting an example of solidarity and cooperation for developing countries. President Xi Jinping has paid five visits to Latin American and Caribbean countries in the past seven years, ushering a new era of relations between China and Latin American and Caribbean countries characterized by equality, mutual benefit, innovation, opening-up and benefit for the people.

Wang Yi stressed, in the face of the global crisis brought about by COVID-19 and profound changes unseen in a century, the Chinese side's will to propel relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries from a strategic and long-term perspective remains unchanged; China's resolution to deepen solidarity and cooperation and achieve common development with Latin American and Caribbean countries remains unchanged; and China's vision of jointly facilitating South-South cooperation and improving global governance remains unchanged. Our joint fight against the COVID-19 is a vivid practice of building a community with a shared future for China and Latin American and Caribbean countries, and also the best commemoration of the 60th anniversary of relations between both sides.
