Wang Yi Speaks by Phone with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on the Libyan Issue

On July 23, 2020, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by phone with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukrye at request. Both sides mainly exchanged views on the Libyan issue.

Sameh Shoukrye said, the Egyptian side pays high attention to the situation in Libya, and calls on all parties in Libya to implement the Cairo Declaration, immediately cease fire and carry out political dialogue, so as to avoid more turbulence. The Egyptian side proposed to hold a foreign ministers' meeting on the Libyan issue to seek a comprehensive political solution.

Wang Yi expressed, the Chinese side speaks positively of the Egyptian side's important role in maintaining regional peace and stability. The Chinese side believes that solving the Libyan issue should stick to political ways and the principle of Libyan-led and Libyan-owned. Both parties to the conflict should cease fire at once, and carry out political, economic and military negotiation in parallel. The United Nations should be supported as the major channel for mediation, while regional organizations such as the League of Arab States and the African Union should play their unique roles. Efforts should be made to prevent the cross-border movement of terrorists, and cannot let Libya be a hotbed for terrorism again. The Chinese side is willing to maintain close communication and coordination with all relevant parties, and play a constructive role in promoting cease fire and resuming dialogue.

Both sides also exchanged views on bilateral relations.
