Wang Yi: Counter-terrorism Needs to Address Both the Symptoms and Root Causes in a Consistent Manner. Selective or Double Standards are Not Acceptable
2021-09-13 14:10

On September 12, 2021 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi jointly met with the press after holding talks with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn in Phnom Penh. A reporter asked that twenty years after the collapse of the Twin Towers in a terrorist attack in New York, terrorism still poses a grave challenge to world peace and development. How does the Chinese side view the current international counter-terrorism situation?

Wang Yi said, it has been 20 years since the "September 11" attacks that shocked the world. I'd like to first renew our deep condolences to those who lost their precious lives in that catastrophe.

Wang Yi pointed out that terrorism is the common enemy of mankind. It knows no borders, no races, no good or bad. No matter in what form, when and where it occurs, it must be resolutely combated. The practices in the past 20 years have proved that counter-terrorism needs to address both the symptoms and root causes in a consistent manner, and call for the concerted efforts of the international community. Those who pursue a selective approach to counter-terrorism will pay the piper. Pursuing double standards runs counter to international justice, and linking it with a particular ethnic group or religion will only encourage discrimination and prejudice.

Wang Yi stressed that in today's world, the scourge of terrorism has not been removed, the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging, climate change poses an increasingly urgent threat to the environment, and drug trafficking and drug-related crimes are spreading in all countries. We are facing a growing number of global challenges that call for global responses. More than ever, the international community needs to work together to tide over difficulties. The world is a global village and mankind is a community with a shared future. Now unity and cooperation among countries are most needed, advocating for secession is turning back the wheel of history, provoking confrontation runs counter to the trend of the times, and hyping up a "new cold war" is bound to fall into an "old rut". It's the right choice for all countries to join hands to safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core, uphold the international order based on international law, practice true multilateralism, overcome various global challenges and create a better future for mankind.
