Wang Yi Speaks with British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss on the Phone at Request

On February 25, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Elizabeth Truss at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Boris Johnson had a phone conversation last October, which provided important guidance for the development of China-UK relations. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between China and the UK. It is an important year of building on past achievements and scoring for new progress in the development history of China-UK relations. The experience and lessons of the past 50 years have proved that mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the UK fully serves the interests of both countries. The two sides should cherish the achievements of bilateral exchanges over the past 50 years, continue to strengthen exchanges and dialogue based on the principles of equality and respect, and work together for the steady and sustainable development of China-UK relations. Under the current volatile international circumstances, China and the UK, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, should provide more stability to the world.

Truss said, it is important for the UK and China, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, to maintain regular communication. The UK is ready to further strengthen high-level exchanges and strategic communication with China and jointly push forward bilateral relations.

The two sides mainly exchanged views on the Ukraine situation.
