2023-02-16 23:55

On February 15, 2023 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met in Paris with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna.

Wang Yi said that China has put the pandemic under full control and is seeing rapid economic and social recovery, which will create greater opportunities for the world. China is ready to resume dialogue and exchanges with France in various fields in an all-round manner to restart the engine of China-France relations. A new round of meetings under the high-level people-to-people and cultural exchanges mechanism should be held as soon as possible to better facilitate personnel exchanges between the two countries. As next year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, China and France can jointly plan for commemorative activities to further consolidate public support and social foundation for China-France  friendship. China highly values its relations with France, and stands ready to work with France to deepen strategic communication and political mutual trust between the two countries, and, through bilateral cooperation, inject new dynamism into China-EU relations and make constructive contributions to world peace, stability and fairness.

Wang Yi said that both China and France have maintained a long-standing tradition of independence, and both support a multi-polar world and oppose bloc confrontation. In the face of the headwinds against globalization and certain countries’ attempt to decouple and sever industrial and supply chains, China and France should continue to practice multilateralism, defend free trade, and strengthen international sci-tech cooperation. China hopes that France will provide a fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese businesses.

Colonna said that she was glad to learn that China has clinched a victory over COVID-19 and made a rapid economic recovery, which is good news for the whole world. France hopes to see bilateral cooperation make new and great progress this and next year, further expanding in areas while resuming institutional dialogues, so as to make up for the time lost due to the pandemic and elevate bilateral relations to a higher level. She expressed the hope that the number of flights between the two countries will return to the pre-pandemic level as soon as possible, so as to promote exchanges between students and scholars and strengthen cooperation in science and culture. She noted that by jointly celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two sides can demonstrate the rich heritage of France-China relations, and that France is firmly committed to the one-China policy and will never change this stance.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual interest and concern.
