2023-03-03 23:00

On March 2, 2023 local time, Foreign Minister Qin Gang met with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno on the sidelines of the Group of Twenty (G20) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi. The two sides agreed to take the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Spain diplomatic relationship as an opportunity to step up friendly exchanges and open up new prospects for bilateral relations.

Qin Gang said that the two sides should speed up the resumption of exchanges between government departments, between legislatures, and at sub-national levels and well  prepare for the meetings of the China-Spain Joint Commission on Science and Technology Cooperation, the Mixed Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation, the China-Spain Forum and other mechanisms. Efforts should be made to expand areas of cooperation, and seek greater synergies between such industries as green energy, electric vehicles, and the digital economy. China is willing to import more quality products from Spain, and hopes that Spain will, as always, treat Chinese enterprises in a fair and just way on its market. The two sides should strengthen communication and collaboration in international affairs to enrich the strategic substance of bilateral relations.

Albares said that Spain and China are important economic and trade partners, with mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries yielding fruitful outcomes. Spain is ready to work with China to facilitate investments from each other's enterprises. Spain will work with China to ensure the success of the events marking the Spain-China Year of Culture and Tourism, and set up more Spanish cultural centers in China, so as to further enhance the friendship between the two peoples. Noting that Spain will take over the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) in the second half of this year, Albares said that Spain is ready to do its job of promoting the development of EU-China relations. Spain appreciates China's position paper on the Ukraine crisis, values China's status and influence as a major country, and expects China to help restore peace in Europe.

Qin Gang said that China has always supported the EU in upholding strategic autonomy, and is glad to see Spain play its role as the rotating EU presidency to promote the sound and steady development of China-EU relations. China has always been committed to a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and peace talks. Under the current circumstances, all relevant parties should, in particular, remain cool-headed and rational, and seek a solution that truly respects the legitimate security concerns of all relevant countries and contributes to enduring stability and peace in Europe.
