Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu's Remarks on the Adoption of UNSC Resolution 1973 on the Libya Issue
2011-03-21 14:33

Q: The UN Security Council has adopted Resolution 1973 on the Libya Issue, deciding to set up a no-fly zone in Libya. What's China's comment on that?

A: China has always stressed that actions of the UN Security Council should follow the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and relevant norms of international law, respect Libya's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, and that the current crisis in Libya should be resolved through dialogue and other peaceful means. We oppose the use of force in international relations and have serious reservations with part of the resolution. Considering the concerns and stances of Arab countries and the Africa Union as well as the current special situation in Libya, China abstained from voting on the draft resolution along with some countries without preventing the adoption of the resolution. We support the commitment of the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy to Libya, the Africa Union and Arab League to addressing the current crisis in Libya in a peaceful way. We hope to see Libya restore stability at an early date and avoid escalation of armed conflicts and the humanitarian crisis.
